Enterprise Risk Services works collaboratively with campus and community partners to reduce the university’s vulnerability and sensitivity to adverse events through proactive risk reduction and loss prevention actions. The unit provides leadership, expertise and guidance to the University’s executive leadership and campus community on a variety of topics related to occupational health and safety, fire & life safety, environmental management, risk management, emergency management and business continuity.

Guiding Principles:

  • Comprehensive: Consider and take into account all hazards, all phases (e.g. mitigation, loss prevention, response, continuity of operations and recovery), all stakeholders and all impacts relevant to crisis and disasters.
  • Progressive: Anticipate future risks and vulnerability and take preventive and preparatory measures to build a disaster-resilient and sustainable campus.
  • Risk / Data driven: Use sound risk management principles (hazard identification, risk analysis, and impact analysis) and data in assigning priorities and resources.
  • Integrated: Ensure unity of effort among all levels of administration and all elements of the campus community.
  • Collaborative: Create and sustain broad and sincere relationships among individuals and organizations to encourage trust, advocate a team atmosphere, build consensus, and facilitate communication.
  • Coordinated: Synchronize the activities of all relevant stakeholders to achieve a common purpose.
  • Productive: Generate results, benefits and products to protect the mission of the university.  
    Flexible: Use creative and innovative approaches to problem solving.

Goals:

  • Promote a risk-aware culture without creating a risk-averse climate.
  • Assess vulnerability and exposure and proactively reduce losses.
  • Protect life, property, the environment, essential services, and mission critical facilities.
  • Support quick resumption of University core mission (education, research, and service) and business systems.
  • Increase cooperation and communication within the community through the planning process, training, and exercising.
